Have you ever been asked the question, “if you could have one superpower, what would it be”? Whether we realize it or not, there is one power that we have been trying to obtain all our lives.
How did this happen?
Since the beginning of time, we have been on a quest for knowledge. When the first humans were created, the Earth was perfect. They had access to everything and could eat from any tree, with one exception: the tree of knowledge/of good and evil. Even though they were forewarned that doing so would result in death, they did so regardless, and we have not learned our lesson since.
There is an unquenchable thirst in all of us that drives us to always want to know more. While knowledge no doubt makes daily living simpler, there are people who want to know the future.
Technology
This quest is most evident in technology. As a 70’s baby, I recall telephones before caller ID was invented. The telephone rang and people had no idea who was on the other end. This was not acceptable and therefore, phones evolved to warn us who was attempting to invade our time. In addition to this, the new technology also informed us where the person was calling from.
Add to this the growth in the use of GPS technology. It not only tells us where we are on the planet but can be used to show where others are and where they may be going.
This is the reason technology is evolving so rapidly. There is an accelerated desire for better, faster, and to know more.
Psychics
According to ibisworld.com, between 2016 and 2021, the psychic services industry in the United States alone is anticipated to rise at an annualized rate of 0.5% to total $2.2 billion, including a projected 2.6% growth in 2021.
This trend clearly indicates that even after the exposure and subsequent hefty fine of the Psychic Readers Network in the late 1990’s, our desire to know the future continues. It also shows that money is no object when it comes to our attempt in knowing what lies ahead.
Quora
The popularity of wanting to know more as well as wanting to know the future became evident when I joined Quora. For those who are unfamiliar, this is a question-and-answer website. In my first week, I obtained more than 8,000 views on my answers. Quora has 300 million monthly active users and I discovered that the most common questions relate to the future. Participants are asking about life after the pandemic, the future of politics, the future of their relationships, Just to name a few.
Final thoughts
So, are surprise parties still worth it? Is it possible to wrap presents without being despised? Apparently, the recipients of these gestures would prefer knowing ahead of time what they are and will be receiving.
